What are the things you can do to get the most out of your life?

By adopting a healthy lifestyle and following some healthy self-care routines you are providing yourself with a good solid foundation from which to work from. By having a strong foundation in place, gives you good energy reserves and provides some lee-way for when life gets topsy-turvy, super-stressful or super-busy.

The Chinese Medicine teachings of Yang Sheng emphasises nurturing and nourishing life. Yang Sheng is the foundation of health in Chinese medicine. It involves using self-cultivation (or self-care) practices for improving your personal health and longevity.

Traditionally this would include practices like

  • qigong (or other breathwork) this can help to calm your nervous system, improves your lungs and respiratory system, and helps to circulate Qi and oxygen around the body.

  • healthy diet includes eating a rainbow of fruits and vegetables preferably within season, to ensure a variety of nutrition, tastes and textures within your diet; remember to include some proteins/ meats and healthy fats to help regulate and maintain your blood glucose levels and subsequent insulin reponses.

  • regular sleep patterns (a regular bedtime and regular wake up time) are helpful in regulating your circadian cycle, hormonal system, and regulating your nervous system. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep every night for best rest and replenishing time.

  • meditation this can help to calm your nervous system and quieten a busy mind. Take this time to re-centre and ground yourself so you are able to take on the world again

  • 30 minutes of exercise at least 3x a week is great for cardiovascular and respiratory health, helps your body maintain good circulation of Qi and Blood around the whole body, and is a great stress buster since exercise releases endorphins (your natural feel-good hormones)

  • living in accordance with nature’s seasons and cycles helps you to remain one with the natural world
