Acupressure for summer well-being

Cool your body using acupressure

Did you know that there are acupuncture points that are used for clearing heat from the body? In this article I’m going to show you 3 sets of cooling points you can use at home for self-care, or between acupuncture appointments. You will be applying gentle pressure on these points with your fingernail or the tip of a pen/pencil for 3-5 breaths. There are 2 main techniques you can use for acupressure:

  • holding sustained pressure on the point

  • push up and down on the point (this varies the pressure on the point)

In ancient times, during some pandemics in Ancient China, some of these acupuncture points were chosen to be bled (only 1-3 drops of blood were released); it was believed the bleeding helped to reduce a strong fever. I’m not suggesting you bleed any points but I thought it was an interesting historical tidbit for you.

  1. Corners of fingernails

These points are located on the corners of all the fingernails. Be gentle with these points are they can be quite sensitive. Use your fingernail, or the tip of a pen to gently activate the points

2. Corners of toenails

These points are located on the corners of all the toenails. These points can be tender to touch. Start with gentle pressure, and gradually increase pressure until it feels quite strong.

3. Tip of the ear

This one is at the very tip of the ear. You want to gently squeeze or pinch this point with your fingers. Again, this is a sensitive spot. Please be gentle with yourself.

Well done! You’ve reached the end of this article

You’ve learnt two acupressure techniques to use on some cooling points on the body, and hopefully you haven’t hurt yourself. How did you go? Are you feeling cooler? Has your mood changed?

BONUS: acupressure for well-being

As a bonus for getting this far; I’ve added an extra point for general well-being for you to use. This one will need your thumb or your finger pressure on it, as it feels quite fleshy and is less sensitive/tender than the points I’ve shown you so far.

This point is on the outer side of the leg, below the knee and near the shinbone. Wrap your left hand around your right leg where the kneecap finishes. Use your right pointer finger to press where your left ring finger and little finger are (see image below).

I like to press on this point and do small circles in a clock-wise direction for 5 breaths.
