Acupuncture for chronic disease support

Chronic disease support Research

Acupuncture is effective for reducing symptoms of flare ups that occur with many chronic diseases. Chinese medicine treatment may be able to assist with:

  • management of pain, stress and fatigue related to some autoimmune disorders, in consuiltation with other treating health practitioenrs

  • management of pain, fatigue and nausea related to many chronic disease

  • chronic pain related to depression by managing the underlying chronic pain

acupuncture for chronic constipation:

  • A 2018 network- meta-analysis found that acupuncture was effective for treating chronic constipation and had fewer side-effects when compared to coventional care (medication).

[Zhu L, Ma Y, Deng X. Comparison of acupuncture and other drugs for chronic constipation: A network meta-analysis. PLoS ONE 2018;13:e0196128.]

Acupuncture for fibromyalgia pain relief: A 2009 study investigating the mechanisms of acupuncture pain relief looked at the brain’s processing of pain via endogenous pain receptors. The human body has its own system of natural pain relief. The body produces natural pain relief chemicals, some are a natural opiod chemical; these chemicals bind to their receptors in order to achieve natural pain relief. Fibromyalgia sufferers have reduced receptors for mu-opiod receptors. Since there are less pain reducing receptors available for the natural pain relief chemicals to adhere/attach to; fibromyalgia suffers experience increased sensitivity to pain. Acupuncture was shown to increase the availblities of these receptors to the natural pain relief chemicals; allowing increased binding potential in the short-term and long-term. These same effects were not seen in sham acupuncture. This means that acupuncture can help some people who use pain medications to maintain or even reduce their dosages of pain medications as it allows more receptors to be available to elicit the same pain relief response, instead of the usual case where people need to increase pain medications due to an acclimitsising or resistance effect of their medications. How does acupuncture support the body?

Acupuncture has a calming effect on the nervous system:

  • engages the parasympathetic nervous system to ease your body into a rest-relax-rejuvenation state of being.

  • signals the body to release endorphins which are the body’s own ‘feel-good’ chemicals

  • endorphins play an important role in regulation of emotional stress responses

Acupuncture improves Heart Rate Variability (HRV). HRV is simply a measure of the variation in time between each heartbeat. This variation is controlled by the automonic nervous system (ANS).The ANS is subdivided into two large components, the sympathetic (fight-flight-freeze) state and the parasympathetic nervous system (rest-relax-rejuvenation) state. HRV is an interesting and noninvasive way to identify any Autonomic Nervous system (ANS) imbalances. When the body is in ‘a fight-flight-freeze mode’, the variation between heartbeats is low. When the body is in a ‘rest-relax-rejuvenation’ state, the variation between heartbeats is high. So, the healthier your ANS is, the faster you are able to switch gears which is reflected in a high HRV. Your body shows more resilience and flexibility; and may be associated with better cardiovascular fitness. Research has shown a relationship between low HRV and worsening depression or anxiety. It is fascinating to see how HRV improves as you incorporate more mindfulness, meditation, sleep, and physical activity into your life.
