5 tips for avoiding summer colds and flu’s

Australia is known for it’s diverse climate, and the summer season can indeed bring scorching temperatures across the continent. It is a season that's not only the hottest but also the most delightful, our calendars are filled with exciting plans and a multitude of social activities. Summer also brings a variety of outdoor events and festivals, including music festivals, food and wine events, and sports competitions. We will easily feel run-down and get colds and flu symptoms which may get you to stay home for a couple of days.

Here are some useful tips to help prevent summer colds and flu:

  1. Stay Hydrated

In the blistering heat, it's important to stay well-hydrated. Replenishing fluids lost due to the summer sun is essential. Water plays an important role in supporting your immunity by keeping your mucus membranes moist and ensuring lymphatic fluids circulate, offering protection against germs and viruses.

In accordance with Chinese Medicine principles, warm drinks are recommended even in the hot summer.

Keep a close eye on your water intake, and if you notice your urine darkening, it's a sign of dehydration. Boost your fluid intake until your urine returns to a light yellow color. Aim for at least 2 liters of water, along with other fluids, throughout the day if you're feeling dehydrated.

2. Acupressure

There is an acupuncture point which is very important and commonly used in Chinese Medicine for general well-being. It is called Zusanli (ST36).

Located on the outer side of the leg, beneath the knee cap and near the shin bone, you can find ST36. To find the point, simply wrap your left hand around your right leg where the kneecap finishes. Use your right pointer finger to press the area where your left ring finger and little finger are (refer to the image below).

Apply pressure to this point, moving in small clockwise circles for five breaths. Try to make this a daily practice to support your well-being.
