What is shiatsu massage?
Shiatsu is a holistic remedial massage style that originated in Japan. The aim of shiatsu massage is to help ensure the smooth flow of energy in channels around the body. This helps to restore the body’s natural balance. These channels connect to and influence our major organs. Any blockages in the flow of energy can lead to areas of pain and discomfort, which can also affect the functioning of bodily systems.
These points and channels of energy are the same as the ones utilized in an acupuncture session, but without the use of acupuncture needles.
Fundamental to shiatsu as a holistic therapy is the belief that the state of your mind, body and emotions together will influence and affect your health and well-being.
A shiatsu massage treatment incorporates lovely stretches, gentle joint mobilizations, muscle releases and firm pressure applied to specific points on the body. These techniques are used to ease tight muscles, knots, aches and pains.
What are the benefits of shiatsu?
Shiatsu massage is a great whole body therapy that is used to help restore or maintain health. Therefore it can be used as a preventative therapy.
Shiatsu is able to improve circulation, promote relaxation, alleviate pain and support the body’s natural balance.
Shiatsu is also able to assist with many different conditions including backache, shoulder & neck pain, headaches & migraines, sports injuries, muscle tension, stress, digestive issues, plus others.
A shiatsu massage session can leave you feeling refreshed, energized and relaxed.
How does shiatsu differ from other types of massage?
Generally, the main difference between shiatsu and other types of massages is that shiatsu massage does not involve the application or use of oils. Therefore the wearing of loose comfortable clothing is advised. However, as you are covered during the entire treatment, you may feel comfortable receiving a shiatsu treatment in a partially undressed state.
Main techniques used in a shiatsu session will involve stimulating pressure points along the channel pathways. These techniques may involve the use of palms, thumbs, elbows or knees.
Shiatsu massage provides the benefits of easing tight, stiff muscles and knots like a remedial massage. In addition to this, shiatsu is gentle enough to ease tension, relaxing the body, and may induce a meditative-like state similar to a relaxation massage.
A shiatsu session can be quite strong & firm, or gentle & relaxing, or a combination of strong & relaxing. Your shiatsu therapist is specially trained in the use of numerous techniques, and so, it is important to discuss your needs with your therapist. Please provide feedback to your practitioner during the session, as this aids in your treatment process.
Other therapies may be incorporated within your shiatsu session that can help with your condition. These include cupping, gua sha & moxa (heat therapy).
Your shiatsu practitioner will discuss any additional treatments that she feels will benefit your condition before proceeding with them.
Please note that the use of cupping and gua sha techniques will involve the application of oil to facilitate these treatment techniques.

Therefore she has the skills and the knowledge to recommend the use of acupuncture and/or Chinese herbal remedies in combination with shiatsu during your session at Bing’s Natural Health.
What to expect in a shiatsu treatment session?
Your shiatsu therapist will begin the session with a consultation with you to determine your general state of health and which areas that needs to be focused on. This can include questions about your medical history, general health and current issue(s). Other traditional diagnosis methods may be included: tongue & pulse diagnosis, or hara diagnosis. This information helps your therapist formulate a treatment strategy to best assist your health & well-being.
About your practitioner
Alice Louey has over 15 years experience as a shiatsu therapist. She also is a registered Acupuncturist and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner.
I enjoy Shiatsu, Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) as they are holistic therapies that incorporate the state of your emotions, mind, body and spirit into your Health & Well-being. These modalities are able to treat many ailments with less side effects when compared with Western pharmaceuticals. TCM & shiatsu enable you to feel like you are part of the healing process rather than feeling like a victim of your ailment. TCM & shiatsu treatments inevitably result in overall improvement of your general health, as well as improvement of your main complaint.
